UPS Using Drones to Improve Delivery Services

quadcopter rc

UPS is working to make delivery services more efficient, and one way to do so is by using drones. UPS could save as much as $50M annually by using drones to deliver packages to multiple places in one shift. Despite these benefits, UPS still needs to adhere to numerous regulations, including federal aviation rules. To begin with, there are many factors to consider when incorporating drones into your business.

Wingcopter

UPS has been testing drone deliveries over the last few years. UPS is still relatively new to drone delivery, but this could be changing. In a recent test, UPS piloted drone deliveries in Florida. The drones hovered around 20 feet above the properties they were delivering packages to, then slowly lowered packages by cable and winch. The first drone deliveries will be less than half a mile, and ground vehicles will drop off the packages at the residences of the residents.

UPS

UPS has shown an enthusiasm for UAVs in the past, but in recent weeks, its CEO has dialed back expectations about the technology. While the company has not yet indicated whether it will recalibrate its drone delivery services but it continues to develop in-house drone capabilities, it suggests that it is serious regarding moving delivery vehicles into space. The company's recent partnership in drone delivery with CVS is a clear sign of its interest. UPS drones are capable not only of dropping packages on winches or cables, but can also hover up to 20 feet above properties.

CVS

UPS is testing drone delivery of prescription medication. Flight Forward, UPS's drone delivery service that delivers prescription medication to the largest retirement home in the United States, will start in May. Matternet's M2 drone system is capable of carrying a five-pound payload up to 12 miles. The drones will also be able to deliver other items, like medical supplies, to medical facilities.

Regulations

UPS is working closely with the FAA on new regulations for drone use in air transportation. UPS has been testing drones in Africa and rural areas for almost three years. One UPS executive is a member of the FAA’s drone advisory committee. There are still many uncertainties, such as whether UPS is legally allowed drone delivery. UPS will be able expand its service while avoiding federal regulations if it is granted an exemption.

Privacy

UPS is collaborating with major hospitals and companies like CVS to develop commercial drone delivery systems. UPS's VP of Advanced Technologies explained the use cases for drones, citing the recent COVID-19 pandemic. UPS drones are a great tool to protect customer privacy. But privacy concerns are also present. It is similar to developing planes by creating drones for UPS. It requires planning and collaboration.

Legal issues

The law in America regarding the commercial use of drones is still evolving. However, many states have already passed laws on this subject. You can search the term "drone" in Google to find out more information about your state's laws. It's best to not overreact. However, this can escalate tensions or even get you in trouble with police.

How To

Repairing a damaged motor on a drone

You must first identify the damaged part of your motor before you can fix it. It is easy to do this by removing the propeller shaft from the motor shaft. Then, you need to remove any wires connected to the motor and inspect its inner workings. If you find something wrong, it is time to identify the problem.

If the motor is in good condition, you shouldn't worry. But if it looks like one of the images below, you will need to replace parts before you can fly again.

Consider a motor that has become bent and won't turn. To get the motor to turn again, you'll need to bend it. To hold the motor, use a vice grip or pair of pliers. After this is done, you should inspect the motor carefully for any signs or wear.

Once you are satisfied with everything, mount the propeller on the motor shaft. Reattach the wires. Now your drone is ready to fly!
