Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

While Russia, the United States and other countries are keen to have more modern aircraft, Ukraine has not been able to provide the same training for its soldiers. The Ukrainians may have been trained in Western countries on vehicles and aircraft but they do not have the same training for drones. Because Ukrainians have grown up using older equipment, such as trucks, drones are easier for them. Drones are also easy to use for soldiers because they don't need "pilots". Drones have a similar interface to video games, making them easy to use.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military uses an unusual approach to fighting ISIS in east Ukraine. Octocopters are equipped with thermal cameras and can be used for night-time missions. Some drones have anti-tank weapons, and can light up columns. These drones are very maneuverable and can hold up to 11 lbs of payload. Due to their small size, the drones are able to fly low over targets and drop munition.

Aerorozvidka started out as an IT enthusiast organization. Today, Aerorozvidka is a military-grade air reconnaissance unit. The first mission of the organization was to operate a drone company. But, over time, it became a fully-fledged unit, with its own head. Due to export restrictions, the Ukrainian government prohibited Russian military aircraft entry into Ukraine. Aerorozvidka depends on crowdfunding and donations to keep the company afloat, as many of the drone components are made in the USA.

Switchblade

The U.S. military has supplied Ukraine with armed "Switchblade," drones capable of striking Russian tanks from faraway. The US Air Force developed these unmanned aerial vehicles in response to Ukrainian needs. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, stated that more than 120 of these machines are currently being sent to Ukraine. It is unclear how the Switchblades will work in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The Switchblade small drone can be launched easily from a tube. It is capable of traveling 40 kilometers. The Switchblade can hit Russian convoys from 6 miles away, unlike Bayraktar drones. In a conflict like Ukraine, these small aircraft can be set up in minutes. The Switchblade's speed is faster than that of the Bayraktar. This is the current U.S. Ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. Unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts" will be delivered to Ukraine. They are meant to terrorize Russian forces. These unmanned aircraft are designed to fly over large areas for between 30 and 40 minutes. They are equipped both with warheads as well as cameras. Switchblade is one such drone. It's a hovering munition measuring 5.5 pounds, and it can eliminate armored vehicles as well as tanks.

These small, light aircrafts come equipped with a powerful, low flight gimbal which allows them to operate from either air, ground, or water. In a conflict like this, any advantage an opponent has over the other side in the aerial battle is important, and the use of Russian kamikaze drones is a direct threat to that advantage. This capability will be crucial to Ukraine's army, as it can break Russian sieges or attack command-and control nodes. While such capabilities would be a major liability for both sides, if a small drone can make a difference on the battlefield, Ukraine could emerge as the victor.

U.S. drones loitering

Russia has started integrating ZALA KYB lotering munitions to its military arsenal. These drones are able to use lethal loitering munitions in the manner of bazookas. These autonomous killing machines could be a result of the use of loitering drones. However, experts and pundits have expressed concern about this. So what can the U.S. do to stop this from happening?

Kirby says that more than 121 Switchblade drones have been sent by the U.S. to Ukraine to assist Kiev in fighting Russian forces. The Switchblade drone is 5.5 pounds and can hover over an area for thirty to forty minutes. It has a camera and small warhead. Its mission is to eliminate the opposition forces within Ukraine.
